Women’s Rights

One Day Training Programme on Women’s Rights Conducted by Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), Sadabai Raisoni Women’s College, Nagpur

 

Objectives of the Seminar:

The major objectives of the training programme were to sensitize the women member of SHGs, who are from poor and marginalized communities, about the various aspects of human rights. It aims at the empowerment of women members of SHGs who participate and further take it to co-members of the respective SHG and their neighbours through their active interactions in the society. Various Acts and UN conventions related to human rights such as Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993; UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, 1979 and its optional protocols; Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005; Female feticide and Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act, 2003; Issues relating to women of disadvantaged sections like SC/ST or persons with disability and Reproductive and Maternal Health were among the main topics of the training programme.

Participants: A total of 100 students and faculty members of Sadabai Raisoni Women’s College participated in the training programme.

Inaugural Session:

Sadabai Raisoni Women’s College organized One- day training program on Women’s Rights.

The program started with welcoming of the Chief Guest Retd. Justice. Vasantee Naik followed by opening remarks by Principal Prof. Amina Vali.

The inaugural session was chaired by Retd. Justice. Vasantee Naik. She delivered the keynote address and introduced the structure of our Constitution and about various Human rights.

Technical Programme Sessions: Training programme had four different technical sessions. Ms. Shazia Bari, Assistant Professor, Department of Law of Dr. Ambedkar College; Dr. Sona Kumar, Assistant Professor, Department of Law of G.H. Raisoni Law School; Ms. Jyoti Khandpasole, Director of Disha for Victim organization, Amravati and Dr. Darshana Pawar, Director of Central India Fertility Centre & Well Women Clinic, Nagpur, were the resource persons who had taken technical sessions.

Session I: In the first session of the programme, Ms. Shazia Bari, introduced the term “Human Rights”. In the introductory session, she talked about the constitutional provisions relating to human rights .Participants were asked certain questions to assess their awareness level. Articles mentioned in the Universal Declaration on Human Rights, 1948 were explained with the help of various illustrations. Issues of human rights related to marriage, voting, employment, child education etc. were discussed. Experience sharing by the participants was the part of the session.

Session II: Dr. Sona Kumar, presented UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, 1979 and its optional protocols. She explained the background, organizational set up and working of Indian Constitution Provisions for Protection of Rights of Women. Functioning of National Human Rights Commission and State Human Rights Commission were discussed. The participants were explained about the Composition and functioning of NWC/SWCs.

Session III: Ms. Jyoti Khandpasole, , Director of Disha for Victim organization, dealt with the major issues of Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005. She discussed the significance of Issues relating to women of disadvantaged sections like SC/ST or persons with disability. She asked women to fight for the dignity of girl child by using the social capital of SHGs. She elaborated the Female foeticide and Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act, 2003. Students and the staff members showed great interest in sharing their experience during this session.

Session IV: In the fourth session, Dr. Darshana Pawar, Director, Central India Fertility Centre & Well Women Clinic, dwelt on the issues of Reproductive and Maternal Health in our society. She discussed about the Nutritional requirements for women. The programme followed the discussion cum lecture methodology. Participants discussed their health issues with the Doctor.

Valedictory Session In the valedictory session, the feedback from the participants were presented and discussed. Ms. Anindita Kundu, Assistant Professor, Sadabai Raisoni Women’s College coordinated this session.
