Expert Talk & Demonstration Session on “Emergency Planning & Preparedness" Organized at GHRCEM, Pune
On 4th October 2024, the Department of Civil Engineering at G H Raisoni College of Engineering and Management, Pune, organized an expert talk and demonstration session on “Emergency Planning and Preparedness in Disaster Management.” The session was conducted by Mr. Devidas R. Gite, a distinguished member of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
Objective of the Expert Session
The primary objective of the session was to educate participants on the significance of disaster preparedness and to provide practical knowledge and skills necessary for effective emergency response. The session aimed to cover the following key areas:
1. Awareness and Knowledge: Emphasizing the importance of disaster preparedness and the role it plays in saving lives and minimizing damage during emergencies.
2. Understanding Emergency Plans: Providing detailed insights into the creation of emergency response plans, including essential steps such as risk assessment, resource allocation, and effective communication.
3. Preparedness Techniques: Demonstrating practical techniques for responding to emergencies, accidents, and medical crises such as heart attacks.
Hands-On Demonstration
The session included several hands-on demonstrations to enhance participants' understanding and skills:
1. CPR Techniques: Mr. Gite demonstrated the proper techniques for performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) on adults, children, and infants. This included instruction on chest compressions, rescue breaths, and the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs).
2. First Aid Practices: Participants were shown practical steps for managing common injuries that may occur during disasters, such as cuts, sprains, fractures, and burns, with real-time demonstrations.
3. Mock Drill on Fire and Safety: A mock drill was conducted to provide information on basic fire and life safety, including the types of fire extinguishers available and how to use fixed firefighting equipment.
Participation
The event saw active participation from a total of 103 attendees, including students, faculty, and non-teaching staff. Participants engaged enthusiastically in the demonstration process, gaining valuable insights into fire safety and emergency preparedness.
Outcome of the Expert Session
The expert session successfully equipped participants with a deeper understanding of the importance of CPR and first aid during emergencies and disasters. Attendees acquired hands-on experience in performing CPR, including chest compressions, rescue breaths, and AED use, as well as basic first aid techniques. Overall, the session provided participants with the knowledge and practical skills necessary to handle emergency situations effectively, contributing to quicker and more effective disaster response at the community level.
Conclusion
The expert talk and demonstration session on “Emergency Planning and Preparedness in Disaster Management” was a significant initiative by the Department of Civil Engineering and the Disaster Management and Photography Club. The knowledge and skills gained from this session will undoubtedly enhance the preparedness of students and staff in the face of emergencies, fostering a culture of safety and readiness within the college community. The department looks forward to organizing more such informative sessions in the future to further promote disaster management awareness.
